Average Used Price: $14,532

The Toyota Corolla has been around since 1990.  The 2010 model was a 10th generation automobile.  The Corolla was and is still a decent car, but the competition has gotten better.  The market is changing, but the Corolla just keeps on being a Corolla.  That being said, repeat drivers who are comfortable with the Corolla or drivers just looking for a solid, dependable car will not be disappointed.

The 2010 Toyota Corolla Base is the lowest of 5 trim levels.  It has a 1.8 liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 132 horsepower.  It has front wheel drive, 15-inch steel wheels, and a 5-speed manual transmission.  It is rated at 26 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.  It goes from zero to sixty in 9.1 seconds.

The Corolla Base comes with a tilt steering wheel and standard air conditioning.  The audio system has 2 speakers, AM/FM radio, a CD/MP3 player, and an audio jack.  There are many more conveniences and upgrades on subsequent trim levels.

The Corolla comes with stability control, traction control, side front airbags, side curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, and active front head restraints.  In government testing, the Corolla got 4 stars out of 5 in front impact, 4 stars in rear passenger side impact, and 5 stars in front passenger side impact.  The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it their highest scores of “good” in side impact and front offset tests.

Conclusions and driver feedback:

The interior is ordinary.  It is just sorta there.  The materials aren’t really bad, nor are they really great.  The seats are comfortable, though, and there is plenty of space in the front seat, with ample headroom and legroom.  The rear seat may be a bit cramped for adults, but is fine for children and smaller passengers.  The cargo space in the trunk is 12.3 cubic feet.

This car is tweaked for passenger comfort.  The steering has a lag between stimulus and response, and the suspension is a bit mushy.  This produces a very nice ride but isn’t all that fun to steer sometimes.  The engine is great, though.  It provides enough power for decent acceleration and effortless driving at highway speeds while still getting very good fuel economy.

Overall, this is a decent car.  If it was from a different company, that would be enough.  On all of its other vehicles, though, Toyota has set a higher standard.  The Corolla is in danger of becoming another car that has outlived its usefulness.  It is time for Toyota to either put out a serious 11th generation Corolla or retire this highly-decorated veteran while it still has its dignity.

The verdict: passable for Corolla fans, but Toyota will sell you a new 2011 Yaris for less than a used Corolla.
