Mazda has a great reputation for making cars that are a lot of fun to drive.  They are usually sport-tuned, giving them a slightly harsher ride than their competition, and usually give up a few miles per gallon for the extra zip in the accelerator.  2010 was a redesign year for the Mazda3, and they addressed the fuel economy by adding a speed to the transmission, creating a more efficient gear ratio.  Luckily, they have kept all of the other things that make a Mazda a Mazda.

The 2010 Mazda3 s Sport Hatchback is a 4-door compact hatchback.  It has a 2.5 liter inline 4-cylinder engine that produces 167 horsepower.  It has 16-inch steel wheels, front-wheel drive, and a 6-speed manual transmission.  It is rated at 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, and goes from zero to sixty in 7.9 seconds.

The Mazda3 s Sport comes with a tilt-telescope, leather-wrapped steering wheel, height-adjustable driver’s seat, bolstered front sport seats, standard air conditioning, a rear spoiler, foglights, power mirrors, power windows, and a trip computer.  The audio system has Bluetooth, 4 speakers, AM/FM radio, a CD/MP3 player, and an audio jack.  There were plenty of optional upgrades available.

The Mazda3 also has anti-lock brakes with brake-assist, stability control, traction control, side front airbags, and side curtain airbags.

Conclusions and driver feedback:

The interior is very nice.  The materials are high quality for its class, and the design is attractive.  The seats are very comfortable and supportive.  There is a lot of cabin space for a compact hatchback, too, and the hatchback slope doesn’t affect the rear passengers.  There is plenty of headroom and legroom in both the front and rear seats.  It also manages to give 17 cubic feet of cargo space.

The handling and ride are typical Mazda.  The suspension is sport-tuned, giving great response and minimal body roll, even when negotiating winding country roads.  The steering is very responsive, too.  The ride is definitely sporty.  The suspension does a great job of minimizing bumps, but you do feel the road.  Most Mazda drivers and passengers get used to this in about five minutes.  The engine has enough horsepower to give nice acceleration and cruise effortlessly at highway speeds.

The bottom line here is that the Mazda3 is a lot of fun to drive.  The only sacrifices made here are the firm ride and two or three miles per gallon of fuel economy.

The verdict: the trade-offs are worth it, but “wet blankets” need not apply.
