2010 Hyundai Elantra GLS Touring Hatchback

Average price from: $14,650

Hyundai makes their cars in South Korea or China.  Except, of course, when they make them in the Czech Republic.  The 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touiring Hatchback is the US label name for the i30cw, which is very popular in Europe.  It is a classified as a compact hatchback, but it is actually a larger hatchback bordering on being a crossover wagon or SUV.  Whatever it is, it isn’t quite as popular in the US as it is in Europe.  Yet.

The 2010 Hyundai Elantra GLS is the lower of two trim levels and has a 2.0 liter inline 4-cylinder engine that produces 138 horsepower.  It has 15-inch steel wheels, front-wheel drive, and a 5-speed manual transmission.  It is rated at 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, and goes from zero to sixty in 8.7 seconds.

The GLS comes with a tilt-only steering wheel, front bucket seats, cloth upholstery, full power accessories, standard air conditioning, keyless entry, and 60/40 split-folding rear seats.  The audio system has 6 speakers, AM/FM/satellite radio, a CD/MP3 player, an audio jack, and a USB/iPod input.

The GLS also comes with front side airbags, side curtain airbags, active front head restraints, anti-lock brakes with brake-assist, stability control, and traction control.  In government tests, the Elantra Touring received 4 stars for side impact protection and a perfect 5 stars for front impact protection.

Conclusions and driver feedback:

The interior is better than the Accent but not quite as nice as the standard Elantra sedan.  It has mid-range quality materials, and a design that is more functional than ornate.  For a compact, the GLS has a lot of cabin space.  There is plenty of headroom and legroom for driver and passengers in the front and rear seats.  There is 24 cubic feet of cargo space behind the seating area, and you can expand it to 65 cubic feet by folding the rear seats.

The engine has enough power for decent acceleration, and cruises smoothly at highway speeds.  The cabin is quiet, and handling is pretty sporty.  The steering and suspension are very responsive, and there is some road feel in both the seats and the steering wheel.  It still manages to give a very nice ride to passengers, though.  We would characterize this vehicle as a hair away from being called “agile” or “athletic.”

All in all, this is a decent vehicle.  It is good for hauling a small family around, with just enough of a hit of sportiness to keep the driver engaged.  The GLS is more like a wagon or compact crossover than a hatchback.  In this case, the combination works.

The verdict: this car is probably a bit underpriced in the US because it isn’t as popular as it is in Europe.  That makes it a good deal.
