You wouldn’t know it from the amount of them you see on the road, but 2010 was the last hurrah for the Chrysler Sebring.  As a standard sedan, it was a decent car, but nothing special.  As a convertible, though, it was an affordable alternative that gave decent performance for a reasonable price.  There’s something about driving with the top down that turns a mediocre driving experience into a great one.

The 2010 Chrysler Sebring Convertible is a 4-seat convertible.  It has a 2.7 liter V6 engine that puts out 189 horsepower.  It has 17 inch wheels, front-wheel drive, and a 4-speed automatic transmission with manual overdrive.  It is rated at 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.  It goes from zero to sixty in 9.5 seconds.

The Sebring comes with a tilt-telescope steering wheel, 8-way adjustable front bucket seats, premium cloth upholstery, power side-view mirrors, a power convertible top, keyless entry, cruise control, standard air conditioning, remote controls for the convertible top, trunk, and windows, a rear window defroster, and a trip computer.  The audio system has 6 speakers, AM/FM radio, a CD/MP3 player, DVD audio, and satellite radio.

The Sebring convertible also comes with ventilated disc anti-lock brakes, stability control (ESC), traction control, side front airbags, side airbags, and side impact bars.  In government testing, the Sebring got five stars for all front impact protection and front seat side impact protection.  It got four stars for rear seat side impact and rollover protection.  The presence of ESC prevents up to 67 percent of rollovers, which makes it even safer.

Conclusions and driver feedback:

The interior is attractively designed, but the materials could be a little better.  Luckily, that is not where you will be focusing your attention with the top down.  When the top is down, there is enough legroom and plenty of headroom in the front.  The rear seat is more of a 2+2 afterthought, though.  The trunk has 13.1 feet of cargo space with the top up, and less with the top down.  The front seats are comfortable, and this car could easily be used by a couple for long, leisurely trips.

This car drives and rides heavy.  It is made for cruising in a straight line.  Acceleration is OK, but nothing special.  There is a lot of body roll while cornering or driving tight, curvy roads.  The good side to this is that it feels like you are traveling faster with the top down, so driving it in a conservative manner usually isn’t a problem.  Also, the sacrifices in handling end up producing a pretty nice ride.

All in all, this is a nice convertible whose limitations make it difficult to get into trouble while driving it.  And there is nothing like a sunny drive with the top down.

The verdict: if you like the convertible experience, you will like the Sebring.  Otherwise, don’t bother.
