iMiEV Electric Car – Information, Photos, Price & Specifications – This is an exciting time in the development of electric cars as manufacturers start to turn out the new generation of plug in electric cars. We think it can’t happen fast enough. The iMiev from Mitsubishi is part of this new wave that can and will save us money at the gas station and from all reports it will also mean a big reduction in ongoing running costs due to the fewer number of moving parts.

The i MiEV’s electric engine offers 47kW of power which is roughly the same as the turbocharged version of the 660cc engine — and 180Nm of torque, almost double the amount offered by that same petrol engine. Easily enough to see the electric i hit a top speed of 130km/h and, in official Japanese testing, have a range of 160km or 100 miles on a full charge, which takes seven hours from empty using a household power point, this makes the car a perfect daily commuter. With the three-phase quick charge system, 80 per cent charge can be achieved in 30 minutes. According to the company, the running cost per kilometre, including the electricity required to recharge the car, works out to about one-third of an equivalently sized petrol car so it’s going to be cheap to run!

Vehicle Type: battery-electric subcompact car

Drivetrain

Drive wheels: rear

Engine: synchronous permanent-magnet electric motor with 330-volt lithium-ion battery pack

Horsepower: 63

Torque: 133 lb-ft

Transmission: none (direct drive)

Dimensions (New York i-MiEV concept)

Wheelbase: 100.4 inches

Length: 135.8 inches

Width: 59.8 inches

Height: 63.0 inches

Base curb weight: 2,381 pounds

Mitsubishi expects to put the i MiEV on the commercial market by 2010 with a starting price of $17,000
