It was the first “box on wheels.”  It spawned a generation of imitators.  And it is still around.  They must be doing something right.  Scion is Toyota’s youth-oriented brand, aimed squarely at Generation Y.  They are solid and reasonably-priced, with a modern edge that even has goth underpinnings on some models, and they always have a very nice audio system.  If this sounds like something you would appreciate, no matter what your age, feel free to read on.

The 2010 Scion xB is classified as a 5-passenger “tall wagon,” and known as a “compact box” to industry people.  It has a 2.4 liter inline 4-cylinder engine that produces 158 horsepower.  It has 16-inch steel wheels, front-wheel drive, and a 5-speed manual transmission.  It is rated at 22 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and goes from zero to sixty in 8.6 seconds.

The xB comes with a tilt steering wheel, bucket seats with driver seat height adjustment, cruise control, standard air conditioning, keyless entry, a tinted rear window, and a trip computer.  The audio system is a Pioneer with 6 speakers, AM/FM radio, CD/MP3 player, an audio jack, a USB/iPod input, and RCA outputs for even more speakers.

The xB also has the five modern safety essentials: stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, side front airbags, and side curtain airbags.  In government tests, the xB got a perfect 5 stars in side impact tests, and 4 stars for front impact protection.

Conclusions and driver feedback:

The interior and dash designs are definitely for younger people.  The are designed for people who grew up with computer games and the internet.  Many of the materials are hard plastic, and the design is stark.  One of the great things about the design, though, is that there is a lot of headroom because of the height of the car.  There is also plenty of legroom, and plenty of space all around.  There are 21 cubic feet of cargo space behind the seats, and another 49 cubic feet of cargo space for a total of 70 if you fold the rear seats down.

The suspension and handling really make a difference to older people, and will probably be the biggest determining factor in whether or not you are “too old” for this car.  Its boxy shape and high center of gravity produce a lot of body roll and you get jostled around a lot in crosswinds.  The steering and suspension are responsive, but the ride is a bit firm for a lot of people.

You also get wind noise and road noise, which can be remedied by turning the volume button of the world class audio system clockwise.  The engine has enough power to adequately handle acceleration and highway driving.  All in all, the xB is very good for hauling people and things around and getting from point A to point B.  If you like to drive around with the stereo turned up and don’t depend on other characteristics of the car for entertainment, you may really like this car.

Then again, if you are older and have a lot of aches and pains, this car will probably make them worse.

The verdict: as the old Pepsi commercial used to say, “for those who think young.”
