2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 Sedan

The Mercedes-Benz E-class, also known as the W212, was new for the 2010 model year, appearing in the US in July of 2009.  The first E-class was built in 1953 on the W120 platform.  It is now in its ninth generation.  Somehow, they actually managed to lower the price from that of the previous year’s model.

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 Sedan is a mid-size luxury car.  It has a 5.5 liter V8n engine that produces 382 horsepower.  It has 17-inch alloy wheels, rear-wheel drive, and a 7-speed shiftable automatic transmission.  It is rated at 16 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.  It goes from zero to sixty in 5.3 effortless seconds.

The E550 comes with a leather-covered, tilt-telescope steering wheel that houses cruise and audio controls, 8-way adjustable front seats with lumbar support and height adjustment, memory settings for three drivers and one passenger, leather upholstery, keyless entry, full-power accessories, speed-proportional power steering, 12-volt outlets in the front, rear, and cargo areas, 2-zone climate control, charcoal filtered air, alloy and wood trim on the dash, console, and doors, turn signals in the side mirrors, a sunroof, a rear defogger, automatic headlights, and a trip computer.

The audio system has 8 speakers, a DVD player, a video monitor, AM/FM radio, a 6-CD/MP3 player, an audio jack, Bluetooth, and a memory card slot.  Keeping it all together is the COMAND interface.

The E550 also comes with ventilated antilock brakes, side front airbags, side curtain airbags, pelvic airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, stability control, traction control, and active front head restraints.  It also has attention assist, which alerts a driver when he is “nodding off,” and Pre-Safe, which anticipates a collision and pre-tenses the seat belts.  Mercedes-Benz has such stringent internal safety standards that they rarely even bother to submit their cars for testing, so there are no scores to report.

Conclusions and driver feedback:

The interior is exactly what one would expect from Mercedes: stoic, understated German luxury.  The materials are luxurious, and everything is perfectly placed.  With absolutely no effort to adorn this interior for anything other than performance and comfort, it still screams “I’m perfect and you’re not.”

The seats are extremely supportive and comfortable.  Better yet, there is ample space in both the front and rear seats, with plenty of head, leg, and shoulder room.  The trunk has a very nice 15.9 cubic feet of cargo space.

The handling is great, too.  The steering and suspension are geared toward comfort, but still manage to give many a high-performance setup a good run for their money.  Acceleration is effortless and powerful, as is cruising at highway speeds.  The ride may be the best in its class.  Mercedes-Benz is famous for providing the best-riding cars under $100,000.  The E550 won’t disappoint anyone looking for that ride.

The verdict: if you’ve got the money, we’ve got the Mercedes-Benz.
