The Mercedes-Benz C Class C63 AMG is classified as a compact executive car. They have been making them since 1993, and they are currently in their third generation, known as the W204. The W204 was developed in “digital testing” before a prototype was even built.
Mercedes-Benz had a 2.1 terabyte virtual replica, which it “drove” through a 15 million mile virtual road course. They actually did crash tests by computer before they ever built the car.
The 2010 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG is the highest of four C Class trim levels. It has a 6.2 liter V8 engine that produces 451 horsepower. It has 18-inch alloy wheels, rear-wheel drive, and a 7-speed shiftable automatic transmission. It is rated at 12 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. It goes from zero to sixty in 4.4 seconds.
The C63 AMG comes with a leather-covered, tilt-telescope steering wheel that houses the audio and cruise controls, 6-way power front sport seats with multi-level heating, height adjustment, and lumbar support.
It also has vinyl and cloth upholstery, split-folding rear seats, keyless entry, full-power accessories, 2-zone climate control split between the driver and front passenger, alloy and leather trim on the shift knob, alloy trim on the dash, console, and doors, turn signals in the mirrors, a cooled storage compartment for food and beverages, a universal remote garage door opener, a rear defogger, a power sunroof, automatic headlights, foglights, and a trip computer.
The audio system has 8 speakers, AM/FM/satellite radio, a CD/MP3 player, an audio jack, and Bluetooth.
The C63 AMG also comes with the typical Mercedes-Benz safety overload. It has antilock brakes that include hill-start assist, pre-pressure, brake drying, and brake assist, side front airbags, side curtain airbags, pelvic airbags, active front head restraints, stability control, and traction control. In US government tests, the C63 received a perfect 5 stars for side impacts and 4 stars for front impacts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it their highest scores of good on all tests.
Conclusions and driver feedback:
The C63 is definitely a Mercedes. There are certain things you expect, and you won’t be disappointed. The interior is immaculate, understated European luxury. There is a presence to any Mercedes that can’t be described, but can only be experienced. The controls are straightforward and easy to use.
Even though it is a compact, the front seat has ample headroom and legroom for someone approaching 6 feet, 5 inches. In addition, the seats are among the most comfortable in their class. The rear seat, though, isn’t really all that great for anyone over about 5 feet, 7 inches. The trunk is also a bit small, at 12.4 cubic feet.
The handling and ride are a slice of heaven. The engine on this trim level is extremely powerful, and is reminiscent of a US pony or muscle car. The handling is almost sporty, with very responsive steering and suspension. There is a touch of body roll, but not nearly as much as you would expect for the ride it produces. The ride is still pure Mercedes-Benz, with maximum comfort and a cabin that is so quiet that you can totally detach from the environment.
Other than the price and the small rear seat, there is nothing here that is remotely negative.
The verdict: very highly recommended.
