Best Price Deals On 2010 Hyundai Sonata SE V6

The 2010 Hyundai Sonata was the last fifth generation Sonata; it would be totally redesigned for 2011 with a sixth generation.  The Sonata has been around since 1985, and has managed to remain fresh and establish a reputation as a car with a lot of features for a lot less money than similarly-adorned cars.

The 2010 Hyundai Sonata SE V6 is a midsize sedan, and the second of three trim levels.  It has a 3.3 liter V6 engine that produces 249 horsepower.  It has 17-inch alloy wheels, front-wheel drive, and a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual shift paddles.  It is rated at 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

The Sonata SE comes with a leather-covered, tilt-telescope steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, an 8-way power driver’s seat with height and lumbar adjustments, a split-folding rear seat, leather and cloth upholstery, full power accessories, standard air conditioning, a rear defogger, automatic headlights, a sport-tuned suspension, a rear spoiler, and a trip computer.  The audio system has 6 speakers, AM/FM/satellite radio, a CD/MP3 player, a USB/iPod input, and an audio jack.

The Sonata also comes with antilock brakes, traction control, stability control, side front airbags, side curtain airbags, and active front head restraints.  The Sonata got perfect scores of 5 stars from the government in both side and frontal impact tests.  The Insurance Institure for Highway Safety gave the Sonata its best score of “good” for front impact, but it’s second-best score of “acceptable” for side impact.  We consider the IIHS rating to be more accurate because of their direct financial stake in their accuracy.

Conclusions and driver feedback:

The interior is a perfect example of a car in transition from ordinary to first-class.  The top of the dash is made of high-quality, soft-touch materials, while the lower dash is made of harder plastic.  The overall appearance approaches luxury, though.  There is plenty of headroom and legroom in both the front and rear seats, making it a very popular choice for family use or commuting.  The trunk has 16.3 cubic feet of cargo space, and was once featured in the television show “House, M.D.” with one of the characters saying he could fit three bags of golf clubs in the trunk.

The main negative here is the handling.  Until its makeover for the following model year, the 2010 Sonata’s steering was lacking in feel and had a noticeable lag.  The good point here is that we chose the SE as the trim level for this review because its sport-tuned suspension kept body roll to a minimum, and the ride quality still borders on luxury.

We also chose this trim level because it has the V6 engine instead of the 4-cylinder base engine.  Even though it is more powerful than the base engine, the V6 is still a bit underpowered compared to the rest of its market segment.

Overall, the Sonata has more pluses than minuses, but it is not even in the same class of next year’s model.

The verdict: the 2010 model is still a decent car, but spend the extra money and go with a 2011 or newer one.
