Best Price Deals 2010 Dodge Charger RT

The Dodge Charger has been a production car since the 1966 model year.  There were three generations from 1966 to 1987, until the current version came back in 2006 on the LX platform.  Dodge decided a “do-over” was in order, so the 2006 model was the first generation of the new Charger.

The 2010 Dodge Charger RT is the fourth of five trim levels.  The “RT” stands for “Road and Track.”  In this trim, you would have to consider the Charger to be a muscle car.  It has a 5.7 liter “hemi” V8 engine that produces 368 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque.  It has 18-inch alloy wheels, rear-wheel drive, and a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual shift override.  It is rated at 16 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, and goes from zero to sixty in somewhere slightly under 6 seconds.

The Charger RT comes with a leather-wrapped, tilt-telescope steering wheel, 8-way adjustable front sport seats with height adjustment, lumbar support, and multi-level heating, a split-folding rear seat, leather upholstery, cruise control, keyless entry, full-power accessories, adjustable pedals, 2-zone climate controls for driver and passenger, a rear spoiler, rear wipers, a rear defogger, automatic headlights, foglights, and a trip computer.  The audio system has 6 Boston Acoustics speakers, AM/FM/satellite radio, a CD/MP3 player, an audio jack, a USB/iPod port, and Bluetooth.

The Charger also comes with side curtain airbags, antilock brakes, stability control, and traction control.  In government tests, it got perfect scores of 5 stars all around for front and side impacts, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it their second-worst score of “marginal” for side impact.  Since the IIHS has a direct financial stake in the accuracy of their tests, we usually consider their results to be more reliable than those of the government.

Conclusions and driver feedback:

The interior of the Charger does not have a lot of frills.  The materials are high-quality, but Dodge didn’t put a lot of time, effort, or money into the visual appeal of the interior.  The controls are very practical, though, and there is plenty of cabin space, especially in front.  There is plenty of both headroom and legroom in the front, and the seats combine soft comfort with plenty of support.  The rear seats are fairly roomy, too, but the design cuts down on headroom for taller passengers.  There are 16 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk.

If you are buying this car, though, you probably aren’t worried about the passengers or the trunk; this car is built to drive fast.  This is a great straight-line car, but the steering and suspension don’t really give a lot of support on winding roads at high speeds, even with the rear spoiler.  Amazingly, though, the ride quality is very good.  There is some “road feel,” but the suspension does a great job of smoothing out the ride.

Ultimately, we don’t trust the Charger because of its low side crash-test scores.  When you combine a car that goes fast with a suspension that doesn’t hold the road like it should and low side-impact ratings, you are asking for trouble.  Luckily for Charger fans, Dodge addressed those problems in the redesign for the following model year.

The verdict: wait for the 2012 model.
