The last year or two, it seems like 80 percent of cars on the market have received aerodynamic exterior design tweaks to make more efficient use of power.  The Mazda5 is one of those.  The new 2012, which is a “compact minivan,” has a sleeker design with a slightly sloped back, while the 2010 just looks like a small minivan.

The 2010 Mazda5 Sport was officially called a midsize wagon.  It has a 2.3 liter inline 4-cylinder engine that produces 153 horsepower.  It has 17-inch alloy wheels, front-wheel drive, and a 5-speed manual transmission.  It is rated at 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

It comes with front bucket seats, rear captain seats, a third row split-folding bench, keyless entry, tilt-telescope steering wheel, automatic climate control, and a rear window wiper.  The audio system has 6 speakers, AM/FM radio, and a CD player.

It also has side front airbags, side curtain airbags, stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes with brake-assist.  In government testing, it got a perfect 5 stars in both front impact tests and front seat side impact.  It got 4 stars in rear seat side impact and roof strength.

Conclusions and driver feedback:

The Mazda5 has plenty of headroom and legroom in the front and rear, and even the third row has 30.7 inches of legroom when it is slid all the way back.  The captain’s chairs in the second row allow easier access to the third row, as do the sliding minivan-type doors.  The seats are comfortable and provide decent support.  The dash and interior design are slightly above average in materials, and the design is practical.  If you fold the third row down, you can get a little over 44 cubic feet of cargo space.

Even with slightly less-efficient aerodynamics than the newer model, the 2010 Mazda5 is still a lot of fun to drive.  Because of the boxy profile, it doesn’t have the extra kick that almost every Mazda has over its competition, but it still has great suspension and very responsive steering.  The suspension provides some road feel, as all Mazdas do, but soaks up major jolts.  Even with a higher center of gravity than most of their line, the Mazda5′s suspension keeps it from having excess body roll.

The engine, while not overpowering, does have enough to accelerate decently and cruise without a lot of effort at highway speeds.  There is a bit of engine and road noise when accelerating or going fast, but it doesn’t indicate any dysfunction.  All in all, the Mazda5 is like a standard Mazda, but in slow motion for people who want to be careful while hauling their kids around.

The verdict: the most conservative Mazda in the last ten years.  You may or may not like that.  It sure is versatile, though.
