The Mazda 6 is Mazda’s midsize sedan. In December of 2002, Mazda developed a new design philosophy for their new models. That philosophy is “Stylish, Insightful, and Spirited.” The Mazdaa6 was the first car designed under that philosophy, and was the fastest Mazda model ever to hit 1 million sales.
The Mazda 6 is currently in its second generation, which started in the 2008 model year, and received a facelift for 2011. Mazdas, as per the design parameters, have a reputation for usually being the most fun cars in their respective market segments to drive. The iSport is the lowest trim level of six, but still comes packed with goodies and has more than enough engine to provide an engaging driving experience.
The 2012 Mazda 6 comes with a 2.5 liter, inline 4-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 167 foot-pounds of torque. It has 16-inch steel wheels, front wheel drive, and a 6-speed manual transmission. It is rated at 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, and goes from zero to sixty in 9.1 seconds.
The Mazda 6 comes with a simulated alloy, tilt-telescope steering wheel with audio and cruise controls on the wheel, front bucket seats with driver height adjustment, a 60/40 split folding rear seat, keyless entry, power windows, power mirrors, and power steering. It also has air conditioning, a 12-volt power outlet, simulated alloy trim on the dash and the console, and a rear defogger. The audio system has 6 speakers, AM/FM radio, a CD/MP3 player, and an audio jack.
It also has the full array of modern safety features, including side front airbags, side curtain airbags, antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, tire pressure monitoring, and active front head restraints to help prevent whiplash injuries. In tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Mazda 6 got perfect scores of good in front and side impact tests, and a second-highest score of acceptable for roof strength.
Conclusions and driver feedback:
In keeping with Mazda’s mission, the interior design is very modern. It has a lot of sleek curves and and splashy colors. The controls aren’t always practical, but they are still close enough for the driver to conveniently reach. The materials are mostly high quality, but a few harder plastics are thrown in. Luckily, there aren’t enough cheaper materials to be a deal-breaker for most. There is a lot of headroom and legroom: a combined 82.9 inches in the front seats, and a combined 75.3 inches in the rear seats. The trunk has 16.6 cubic feet of cargo space.
The Mazda 6, like every other Mazda, is tweaked toward sporty and peppy performance. The steering is tight, and so is the suspension. This gives great response and very nimble handling. The only drawback is that the ride is a bit firm for some. You can feel the road from any passenger seat, and the overall ride is a bit stiff. That being said, there are millions of satisfied Mazda customers who love the feel of the road under the seat. There is also a bit of road noise in the cabin, but most Mazda drivers and passengers don’t care.
The engine is good enough to give the Mazda 6 a little bit of extra zip compared to other cars in its market segment. This is also a Mazda trademark. It decreased fuel economy a bit, but it also makes the car a much more engaging experience for the driver. Mazda drivers love the trade-off; those who don’t usually choose a different brand with less power and better mileage.
All in all, the Mazda 6 iSport is a great car for a single, couple, or small family. It is comfortable enough for long trips but reliable enough for daily commuting. And it has just a bit of attitude to help engage the driver from time to time if he or she chooses to “let the horses run free.”
The verdict: very highly recommended.
Options, other trims, and miscellaneous caveats:
There are five other trim levels. Mazda starts out pretty much every vehicle they sell with a very well-adorned base model, and then keep adding features and benefits until the highest trim level is very close to being a luxury car, but without the squishy ride.
The next trim level up from the iSport is the iTouring. It gives you a 5-speed automatic transmission, the features from the iSport, and adds Bluetooth audio and phone connectivity, a 6-CD changer, leather wrapping for the shift knob and steering wheel, a trip computer, foglights, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The next trim level is the iTouring Plus. It starts with the features on the iTouring and adds a blind spot monitoring system, a sunroof, turn signals in the outside mirrors, and electroluminescent dashboard gauges.
The next trim is the iGrand Touring. This trim adds leather upholstery, 2-zone climate control, a rear view camera, heated front seats, a 10-speaker Bose sound system, and a multi-information display.
The next trim, the s Touring Plus, gives you a 3.7 liter V6 engine that produces 272 horsepower and 269 foot-pounds of torque. The mileage goes down to 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, but it goes from zero to sixty in 6.5 seconds.
The last trim is the s Grand Touring, which adds 18-inch aluminum wheels.
The most popular option is the Technology Package, which is available for either Grand Touring trim. It has heated outside mirrors, automatic wipers, automatic xenon headlights, keyless ignition and entry, satellite radio, auto-dimming mirrors, a power passenger seat, and driver memory settings.
You can also get a navigation system on Grand Touring trims which has realtime traffic and a touchscreen display.
Many of the options are available as single options, as are a chrome fuel-filler door, rear spoiler, and remote engine start.
