The Cadillac SRX is a luxury crossover SUV, and has been on the market since the 2004 model year.  It is in its second generation.  Though it is modern, it will remind buyers of timeless Cadillac attributes: distinctive exterior, attractive and upscale interior, and enough power to both accelerate and cruise with minimal effort.

The 2012 Cadillac SRX Luxury SUV is the second of four trim levels.  New for this year, it has a 3.6 liter, DOHC, flex-fuel, V6 eingine that produces 308 horsepower.  It also has 18-inch alloy wheels, fromt-wheel drive, and a 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission.  It is rated at 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, and can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

The SRX comes with a heated, leather and wood steering wheel that houses the audio and cruise controls, 8-way front power, multi-level heated bucket seats with height adjustment and lumbar support, split-folding, reclining rear seats, leather upholstery, keyless entry, full-power accessories, adjustable pedals, 12-volt outlets in the front, rear, and cargo areas, a universal remote garage door opener.

It also comes with wood trim on the doors, leather and wood trim on the shift knob, simulated alloy and wood on the dash, simulated alloy trim on the center console, a sun sensor, 2-zone climate control divided between the driver and front passenger, memorized settings for 2 drivers, climate control, and audio system, a sun sensor, a rear spoiler, a power rear liftgate door, a rear defogger, a power sunroof, a roof rack, automatic headlights, and a trip computer.  The audio system has Bluetooth, 7 conventional Bose speakers, a Bose subwoofer, AM/FM/satellite radio, a CD/MP3 player, an audio jack, and a USB/iPod connection.

The SRX has a lot of safety features: ventilated antilock brakes, brake hill holder, stability control, traction control, side front airbags, side curtain airbags, post-collision safety system, front and rear parking sensors, reverse tilt mirrors that give a view of the curb while in reverse, and the patented GM OnStar emergency communication system.  In tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the SRX received perfect scores of good on side impact, frontal-offset, and roof strength tests.

Conclusions and Driver Feedback

The interior is almost overwhelming.  It is exquisitely designed, and made of very fine materials.  The dashboard is modern, with a futuristic array of controls.  The seats are extremely comfortable, and there is plenty of room for taller passengers in the front seats.  The only negative is that the sunroof cuts into headroom in the rear seats; anyone over about 6 feet tall may be a bit uncomfortable on longer trips.  If you fold down the rear seat, you can get a total of 61.1 cubic feet of storage space, with 29.8 cubic feet behind the seats.

The SRX handles well, and the ride is one of the best in the market segment.  While it won’t win any races, the SRX still accelerates smoothly, and maintains speed easily.  The SRX is adjusted for a great ride, but it still handles very well.  It still handles like a crossover SUV, but steering is responsive and body roll is kept to a minimum.  The ride is extremely smooth.  One of Cadillac’s calling cards for years has been one of the most plush rides in the business, and the SRX doesn’t disappoint.

All in all, the SRX is a very nice luxury crossover SUV.  While the sunroof does cut into rear headroom, and we would like to see an increase of about 50 horsepower, the appearance and the smooth ride more than compensate for its faults.

The verdict: highly recommended as long as you don’t need room for taller passengers in the rear seat or if you value a cushy ride over sporty performance.

Options, other trims, and miscellaneous caveats.

There are a total of four trims.  In order, they are the Base, Luxury, Performance, and Premium.  The base comes without the sunroof, which would be great for buyers who want more rear headroom.  There is also no keyless entry, front or rear parking sensors, leather upholstery, driver memory functions, adjustable pedals, or heated seats.

The Performance trim, which is the third-highest, has foglights, adaptive xenon headlights, sport-tuned steering and suspension, a 10-speaker Bose surround sound audio system, and a navigation system.

The Premium adds mostly gratuitous extras: heated rear seats, rear seat audio controls, ventilated front seats, and 3-zone climate control.

There are plenty of options available.  One of the most popular options is all-wheel drive, which is available on all models.  We like AWD because it is great for driving in inclement conditions.  It does decrease fuel economy by one mile, though.

Most of the remaining options are only available on the three upper trim levels.  The navigation system, which is voice-activated and has realtime traffic, and the 10-speaker Bose system can be added as options to the Luxury trim.  There is also a rear seat DVD entertainment system.  There are also plenty of smaller, cosmetic options available.

Many people are concerned about the 2010 recall.  There was a danger that if you used regular gas instead of the recommended premium, and then drove the car into the ground, it could catch on fire.  Cadillac recalled approximately 550 of the units affected.  The only units affected were those with the 2.8 liter, turbocharged V6 engine.

Not only did Cadillac recall the affected units, but they also addressed the problem by no longer offering the turbocharged engine.  Now, the only engine available is the naturally-aspirated, 3.6 liter V6.  Even though the problem was caused by idiots who couldn’t follow directions, Cadillac took care of them.

Now, the SRX is one of the safest vehicles on the market.  All in all, it’s great for singles, couples, or young families.  If it traded the headroom-eating sunroof for about 50 more horsepower, it would receive our highest recommendation.
