The Mazdaspeed3 (MS3) is basically a high-performance version of the Mazda3. It has a sport-tuned suspension and more horsepower. These are very fun cars. However, it can be a bit problematic to make a performance car with front-wheel drive because of torque steer.
Torque steer is the result of the steering axle and drive axle being the same when there is enough power to produce uneven traction in the two front wheels. It can cause the steering wheel to pull or the car to go off course. Luckily, thanks to software and a limited slip differential, torque steer in the MS3 is kept to a minimum.
The 2010 Mazda MS3 is a 4-door, high-performance hatchback. It is available in one trim level. It has a 2.3 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 263 horsepower. It has 18-inch alloy wheels, front-wheel drive, and a 6-speed manual transmission. It is rated at 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, and goes from zero to sixty in 6.3 seconds.
The MS3 comes with a tilt-telescope steering wheel, keyless entry, full power accessories, cruise control, high performance tires, 2-zone climate control, foglights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cloth and leather upholstery, a digital turbo boost gauge, and front sport seats. The audio system has Bluetooth, 6 speakers, AM/FM radio, CD/MP3 player, an audio jack, and controls on the steering wheel.
The MS3 also comes with anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, side front airbags, and side curtain airbags. There is no MS3 test data, but the standard Mazda3 got all top scores of “good” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and was made a Top Safety Pick.
Conclusions and driver feedback:
First and foremost, this car is a lot of fun. Not only is it fun, but it is easy on the budget. The seats have leather upholstery with red pattern cloth inserts, and the rest of the interior is standard Mazda. It combines a modern design with high-quality materials. The seats are very comfortable, and there is plenty of both headroom and legroom in the front and rear seats.
The interior is perfectly matched to the engine and suspension. The engine has a lot of pep, and the suspension, like most Mazda suspensions, is sport-tuned, and is very responsive when navigating tight corners or curves. The ride is firm, but the suspension is able to handle surface imperfections easily. You feel the road, but don’t get jarred by the bumps.
All in all, this car reminds us that life doesn’t always have to be dull. It gives high performance for a relatively low price. In the “bang for the buck” department, this may be the best of the “hot hatches.” It goes fast enough to give you some excitement, but not fast enough to get you in trouble. It also makes a bit of noise, but it’s a good, throaty noise.
The verdict: this is a great car.
