2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser Classic

Average Price: $15,231

In 2010, after eleven model years, Chrysler manufactured its last run of the PT Cruiser.  It was a very retro-styled vehicle, but quickly gained popularity, and was the only Plymouth vehicle that became a Chrysler after Plymouth was discontinued.  When the PT Cruiser first came out, it was unique, and really had no competition.  As the years went buy, though, competitors put out modern versions of the PT Cruiser that had more to offer.  Instead of updating the PT Cruiser, Chrysler chose to put it to rest.  But it still has plenty of fans.

The 2010 PT Cruiser Classic is a 5-seat compact wagon and is the only trim level.  It has a 2.4 liter inline 4-cylinder engine that produces 150 horsepower.  It has 16-inch alloy wheels, front-wheel drive, and a 4-speed automatic transmission.  It is rated at 19 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.

The PT Cruiser comes with a leather-wrapped tilt-only steering wheel, front bucket seats, split-folding rear seats, cloth upholstery, standard air conditioning, cruise control, power locks and windows, foglights, and a trip computer.  The audio system has 4 speakers, AM/FM radio, CD/MP3 player, satellite radio, and an audio jack.

The PT Cruiser also has anti-lock brakes, traction control, and side front airbags, but lacks stability control and side curtain airbags.  Consequently, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it its highest rating of “good” for front impacts, but its lowest score of “poor” for side impacts.

Conclusions and driver feedback:

The interior décor is still retro.  It is lacking in modern touches, but the materials are of decent quality.  There is plenty of space in both the front and rear seats, and a total of 63 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats removed.

The handling is ordinary.  The steering is moderately responsive, while the suspension is tuned for passenger comfort.  The result is a bit of body roll, but a comfortable ride.  The turning radius is too large on this vehicle, though, and makes it difficult to navigate in tight situations.  The engine is enough to get smoothly from point A to point B, but it will take its time getting there.

The bottom line here is that the PT Cruiser takes “retro” too far by not including side curtain airbags or stability control.  A rating of “poor” for side impacts is unforgivable and unacceptable.  When you add it to a lack of stability control, which makes the vehicle more likely to have side impacts and rollovers, there is just too much to lose and not enough to gain by driving a PT Cruiser.
Chrysler knew what they were doing when they put this one to rest.

The verdict: not in this lifetime.
