2011 Porsche 911 GT3 Review

The Porsche is probably THE iconic sport car in Europe.  If Americans are going to buy a European sport car, the Porsche is the first car that usually comes to mind.  It’s not as easy as just ordering a Porsche anymore, though.  This year, Porsche has made 19 different models to choose from.  Let’s take a look at one of the more typical ones.

The 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 is a traditional “2 + 2” sport coupe, and it is somewhere in the middle of their now-extensive line.  It costs twice as much as the least expensive Porsche and half as much as the most-expensive model.  It has a 3.8 liter, horizontally-opposed 6-cylinder engine that provides 435 horsepower.  It has 19-inch performance tires, rear-wheel drive, and a 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive.  It is rated at 14 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway.  You won’t care about the mileage.

The GT3 comes with keyless entry, a tilt-telescope steering wheel, remote window controls and trunk release, cruise control, standard air conditioning, full power accessories, 6-way adjustable driver and passenger sport seats, split-folding 2 + 2 rear seats, simulated suede upholstery, suede shifter, and many other features too numerous to mention.  The audio system has 4 speakers, AM/FM radio, a CD/MP3 player, an audio jack, a USB/iPod interface, and Bluetooth.  There are also numerous upgrades that can make the GT3 as luxurious and expensive as you want to.

The GT3 comes with stability control, traction control, ventilated anti-lock brakes, side front airbags, and side curtain airbags.  It stops from 60 mph in 99 feet.  There are no test results available, but Porsche makes their cars as safe as a two-seat sport coupe can be.

Conclusions and driver feedback:

The cabin, though obviously small, is beautifully adorned.  The materials are soft and lush, and the controls have what can only be described as the “Porsche look.”  There is plenty of headroom and legroom in the front seats.  The rear 2 + 2 “seats” are not recommended for use, but they are OK for very short hops or very small passengers.  They are also a nice adjunct to the front trunk.

What’s important, though, is how it drives.  The GT3 drives and handles great.  There is plenty of horsepower for rapid acceleration, smooth shifting, and smooth performance at high speeds.  The steering and suspension are world-class.  The center of gravity is extremely low, the spoiler creates a lot of down-force, and the GT3 stays on the road even when the driver is doing things to it that may seem horrific to passengers.

The ride is sporty, and not for the timid, but most people who climb into a Porsche know exactly what they are getting into.

As for negatives, there are none.  The Porsche was one of the first sport cars, and the prototype for others to imitate.  They still have plenty of game.

The verdict: very expensive but highly recommended.
