2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS Review & Specs

2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS

MSRP: $245,000

Yes, that’s right.  The comma is in the right place.  This car is a quarter of a million dollars.  That is about ten times what an average sedan goes for, but only about 60 percent of the Ruf-built 911 variants.  Let’s see how the “upper crust” live.

The GT2 RS has a twin-turbo, 3.6 liter Carrera S engine that somehow produces 620 horsepower.  It has 19-inch center-lock wheels, rear-wheel drive, and a 6-speed manual transmission.  It will go from zero to sixty in 3.2 seconds.  It is rated at 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway in “normal” driving.  If you drive it like a sport car, though, that mileage figure will probably go down a bit.

There are way too many features here to list them all, but here are a few: sport seats, limited-slip differential, power everything, a leather interior, adaptive headlights, heated and ventilated seats, and a navigation system.  To make room for the enhanced powertrain, the audio system is downgraded to 4 speakers, AM/FM radio, CD/MP3 player,  Bluetooth, and an iPod interface.

The GT2 RS has ventilated ceramic anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, side front airbags, and side curtain airbags.

Conclusions and driver feedback:

The interior, as expected, is made of the highest-quality materials.  It is swathed in leather, suede, and other soft-touch materials.  The headroom and legroom in the two front seats is as good as it gets in a sport car.  The rear 2 + 2 seats are pretty much there for decoration, but they make great cargo space.

Really, though, you aren’t going to pay a lot of attention to all of that.  The main reason to buy one of these is to see how fast you can drive.  Every superlative one can possibly use applies here.  It is fast, effortless, and smooth.  It allows you to become part of the road.  The steering is ultra-responsive and the suspension allows this car to hug the road as well as any on the market.  It also has aerodynamic enhancement to help reduce drag and add downforce.

This is really a race car disguised as a sport car.

  1. The verdict:  if you have a quarter million laying around and like to drive really, really fast, this might be the car for you.
