The 2011 Mercury Milan is a midsize sedan. Ford is retiring the Mercury brand after this year, but the Milan certainly doesn’t look like it belongs on the “discontinued” rack. There are two trim levels: the Base and the Premier.
The 2011 Mercury Milan Base has a 2.5 liter, 4-cylinder engine that produces 172 horsepower. It has 16-inch alloy wheels and a 6-speed, manual, front-wheel drive transmission. It is rated at 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

The Milan has standard air conditioning, cruise control, a leather-wrapped, tilt-telescope steering wheel, and keyless entry. The audio system has 6 speakers, a CD/MP3 player, audio jack, and satellite radio. There are also upgrade packages available, such as the Sync package that includes an iPod interface, bluetooth, and 3 years of information, traffic, and directions services through the Ford
Sync system.
The Milan has anti-lock brakes, traction and stability controls, side front airbags, and side curtain airbags. It received ratings of 5 stars in all impact tests except the 4 star rating for rear passengers in side impact testing.
Conclusions and driver feedback:
It’s too bad this is Mercury’s last year, because there is a lot to like about the 2011 Milan. They may have saved their best interior experience in a midsize for their last year. The seats are roomy and comfortable. The ride is very smooth, and the car handles extremely well for an low-to-mid-price model.
The suspension has the right combination of sporty and solid to produce a ride that is neither too sporty or too detached from the road. The steering is responsive for its size, and the Milan maneuvers well for its size. The upgraded “look” works well, too. The materials in the cabin are high-quality, and the dashboard is “busy” but still fairly attractive.
Mileage in the Milan is pretty good for a car of its size, too. It does this without sacrificing a lot of acceleration. There is also a decent amount of storage space in the trunk, and the rear seats fold if you need more storage and have less passengers. The exterior has a fairly sleek look to it; it adds sporty touches while still retaining the look of a family car.
There are a few negatives. The engine can make a bit of noise during acceleration. This bothers some, while others ignore it. Some also see the dash as too busy. The steering doesn’t give as much feedback as some would like. And some fear that because it is the last year of Mercury, parts and service will be more difficult if they keep the car for a few years.
Really, though, the positives here far outweigh the negatives. For its swan song, Mercury has made a very nice midsize sedan that is very competitive in its marketplace.
The verdict: If you like Ford and Mercury products and are looking for a family car, the Milan is a winner.
