2011 Ford Mustang Convertible V6

MSRP  $27,145

Have you heard of the term, “Pony Car?”  Wikipedia defines it as “an affordable, compact, highly styled car with a sporty or performance oriented image.”  The term “Pony Car” was inspired by and loosely named after the original Ford Mustang, which came out in 1964.

The Pony Car has gone in and out of the public’s consciousness: sometimes galloping, sometimes trotting, and sometimes stuck in the gate.  With this year’s Mustang, Ford has announced that the Pony Car is back.

The 2011 Mustang Convertible V6 is the lowest of four trim levels, but there is plenty to like, even without all of the premium features.  It features a 3.7 liter, dual overhead camshaft, aluminum engine that produces 305 horsepower.  It has 17 inch alloy wheels and a 6-speed, manual, rear wheel drive transmission.  It is rated at 18 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

The base model has full power accessories, cruise control, keyless entry, standard air conditioning, and a limited slip rear differential.  The sound system has an AM/FM radio, CD/MP3 player, and an audio jack.

For another $3,000, you can upgrade to the premium version and get, among other upgrades, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery, and a Shaker 500 audio system.

Most of the modern safety features are there.  The Mustang convertible has stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and front side airbags.  It also adds side spotter mirrors and the Ford MyKey system, which will keep your teenager from seeing just how fast this car might go.  Also, the Mustang got the highest possible scores in all crash testing.

Conclusions and driver feedback:

“Yeah, but how does it drive?”  Compared to the last decade, it almost isn’t the same car.  The V6 is a major improvement over last year’s model.  Insiders and customers alike are extremely impressed at how the Mustang recalls the days when it was THE prototypical Pony Car.

This car, even with the V6 engine, is extremely quick.  The suspension has also been tweaked for higher and sportier performance.  Electric-assist power steering makes the Mustang Convertible even more responsive.  The word that is being used the most is “nimble.”  Or “agile.”  The V6 has plenty of power without entering “muscle car” territory, holds the road nicely, and even manages to get decent gas mileage.

There aren’t really very many negatives here that can’t be cured with upgrades.  Some don’t like the regular suspension when putting the Mustang “through the wringer,” because it seems to “roll” too much.  Some confuse a sporty ride for a lack of quality.

However, most people don’t buy a Mustang to get a sedan-like ride.  They expect a sportier feel.  Also, the V6 can be upgraded to the “performance package” which will definitely take care of any “roll” and make the car hug the road.

The verdict: welcome back, Mustang.  We’ve been waiting for you a long time.
